New AMA CPT Codes Bring Flexibility to RPM and RTM: Effective January 2026
The American Medical Association (AMA) recently approved major updates to CPT codes for remote patient monitoring (RPM) and remote therapeutic monitoring (RTM), effective January 2026. These changes aim to enhance care flexibility and streamline billing practices.
Key Changes to RPM Codes:
• New Device Supply Code: Covers data collected over 2-15 days, with CPT 99454 now applying to 16-30 days.
• CPT 99457 Revision: Lowers the interactive communication minimum to 11-20 minutes (previously 20 minutes).
• CPT 99458 Adjustment: Allows additional interaction to be billed in 10-minute increments (previously 20 minutes).
RTM Code Enhancements:
Three new RTM codes for 2-15 days of data collection will cover respiratory, musculoskeletal, and cognitive behavioral therapy. CPT 98980 now requires 11-20 minutes of interaction, with CPT 98981’s 20-minute component adjusted accordingly.
Implications for Providers:
Healthcare professionals should prepare to update their coding practices and ensure billing software aligns with the new standards. The changes allow for more frequent billing of shorter RPM/RTM sessions, potentially increasing the effectiveness and profitability of remote care programs.
